EVERYTHING YOU NEEED TO KNOW ABOUT A RUG PAD

WHAT IS A RUG PAD ANYWAY?

The most simplistic answer is that a rug pad is a type of padding placed underneath a rug. This is done in order to keep the rug from sliding when you walk on it, and to protect both the rug and the flooring underneath from damage. Utilizing a rug pad can extend the life of your rug by many years, and can provide safety via preventing slipping, as well as comfort via padding and cushioning. In some instances, the rug padding can even aid in keeping your rug clean by allowing for proper ventilation.

WHY DO I NEED A RUGPAD?

1. Protecting your rug from damage and wear

Rug pads are the perfect solution to increase the life of your rug. They limit abrasion from normal use, and reduce the friction caused by rubbing on the underlying flooring. Without a rug pad, you would typically see your carpet or rug become a beaten up, thinned and aged over time. This is especially true if the rug or carpet is located in a high traffic area like the entrance to your home, etc.

2. Safety

Padding can help aid in preventing any shifting of the rug or carpet when being walked on. With pads designed for specific floor types like hardwood, laminate, tile or cement, you can find the perfect addition for your rug to ensure proper gripping to the surface underneath without damaging your valuable rug. In general, hardwood and laminate flooring are the two types of flooring materials most prone to causing rugs and carpets to slide and shift. Another strong consideration for a non-slip solution is if you have children (who tend to run and play carefree) or elderly inhabitants in your home. Both are prone to slipping and falling on loose rugs and carpets.

3. Cleanliness

The majority of rug pads are designed with cleanliness in mind, having both ridges and bumps or other attributes aimed at trapping dust and other debris that would otherwise become lodged in your precious rugs. In addition to trapping dirt and grime between the rug and pad, this feature allows for air flow and thus aids in helping your vacuum suck up the dirt without causing any damage. Lastly, this barrier protects your underlying flooring from any liquid spills that may occur.

4. Protecting your Underlying Flooring

Collections of dirt and debris, as well as abrasion from use can cause damage over time. Typically manifested as scratches, chipping or indentations, this damage can be both unsightly as well as expensive to repair. Rug pads can prevent both damage, and limit exposure of your flooring to any dyes or coloring in the rugs. This is especially useful if using the rug over a carpeted floor where staining could easily occur.

5. Comfort and Noise

Yes, oriental and other eloquently designed rugs are beautiful….but they can clock in quite low on the comfort scale. Rug pads can provide a pleasant surface to walk on, with cushion options ranging from soft to firm padding, and even memory foam options. As an added benefit, these pads provide outstanding noise reduction, which can be a big benefit if you are using them on hardwood or tile flooring, or if you live in an upstairs apartment.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT KIND OF RUG PAD TO BUY?

Don’t worry, we know it can be a bit confusing with all the different flooring options, padding materials and so on. We’ll walk you thru what to look for, and as always, if you have any questions or need any assistance at all, please feel free to give us a call at our USA headquarters in Connecticut.

1. What Size Rug Pad do I Need?

Our suggestion is to measure your existing rug and get a pad that is as close as possible to the size you measured. We custom cut every order and make sure to remove 1” or so on each side to ensure the rug pad doesn’t “stick out” from underneath the rug or carpet. If you need any help with measurements just give us a call or email and we’ll walk you thru it. And even if you have an odd sized or shaped rug, we can still accommodate you with our custom cuts at no extra charge.

2. Do I need a “Non-Slip” Rug Pad?

There are a few factors to consider here. Smaller and thinner type rugs tend to move around a lot more than larger, thicker types, though that’s not to say that large rugs don’t slip and slide as well, especially around the edges and corners. Rugs placed over hardwood, laminate and tile also tend to move around a lot regardless of size and type, and may be better suited to a non-slip rug pad.

Other considerations include use by children, elderly, anyone with a limp or gait that may be prone to slipping or falling, and the area you place the rug in. High traffic areas should almost always use some form of a non-slip rug pad in our opinion.

While rubber rug pads are what often come to mind when thinking of “non-slip,” we offer a wide range of material types that include non-slip features, such as: felt, wool, eco-friendly all natural options, vinyl, and more.

3. Special Considerations for Rugs on Carpet

As you may already know, rugs placed over carpeting tend to wrinkle and buckle as people and furniture are moved over them. For carpets, we highly recommend our no-muv options. No Muv works by resisting the friction caused by moving over the rug and aim to keep the rug as flat as possible over carpet.

4. Rug Pad Material

Rug pads come in a number of materials suited for varying floor types and uses.

Materials:

  • 100% Felt
  • Natural Rubber
  • Eco-Friendly materials
  • Memory foam
  • Rebond
