Common Questions on Rug Pads for Hardwood Floors

Which rug pads stain wood floors? Why do rug pads stain hardwood floors?

There are typically 3 reasons why certain types of rug pads will end up staining or discoloring hardwood floors.

Poor quality padding/pvc pads

Often times, this issue stems from low quality plastic and pvc rug pads on wood floor finishes. Low quality rug pads for hardwood floors can react with your floor finishes, yellowing your floor finish or leaving a check mark design in your floor finish. This typically occurs only with glossy floor finishes such as polyurethane, vinyl, acrylic, and lacquered surfaces.

Roughly 85% of all rug pads come from overseas manufacturers. The majority of these pads are manufactured with low quality chemicals and plasticizers. Over time, the oils from certain pads can break down and end up reacting with your floor finishes, permanently marking your hardwood floors with a waffle pattern or creating a yellow shadow over your floor finish. This only occurs several years after the rug pad is first installed. Hot & Humid climates and glossy floor finishes are more susceptible to floor damage with pvc pads, especially with regards to waxed, lacquered, oil based, vinyl, & acrylic finishes. To avoid this common problem, your best bet is to ask your floor manufacturer which materials are safe to use with hardwood floors.

Waiting for Proper Curing Times

Another way rug pads can harm wood floor finishes is if you lay down a rug pads on newly finished or refinished hardwood floors. Wood floor finishes take a certain amount of time to properly cure. Most wood floor finishes take roughly 2-4 weeks to properly cure and mature. Area rug pads for hardwood floors that contain latex or pvc have the potential to permanently mar the floor finish.

Often times, sunlight exposure can change the color of your floors. Flooring manufacturers say that you should re-arrange your area rugs every few years. However, in my experience I can’t tell you one person I know who does this. Although more rare, sunlight exposure can alter your floor finishes over time. This has nothing to do with the type of rug pads your using.

What is the best rug pad for hardwood floors?

The best rug pads for hardwood floors will anchor your rugs while providing a nice buffer layer for comfort and floor protection. Aside from the comfort benefits of a thicker rug pad, a dense rug pad for wood floors will protect your hardwood floors from furniture damage while preventing the backing of your Oriental rugs from scratching your wood floor finishes. However, with thicker rugs, or if door clearance is an issue, a lower profile rug pad is recommended. Our best rug pads for hardwood floors is our Superior Lock, Anchor Grip, and Elite-Hold rug pads. These rug pads will provide a firm, dense foundation for your rugs while preventing lateral movement in any direction. For larger rugs that may not need a non-slip pad, our felt rug pads for wood floors (American-Fiber & Sure-Fiber) offer dense protection and comfort with larger rugs that are typically anchored down with furniture.

When it comes to caring for your flooring, a lot of attention is usually placed on making sure to limit outdoor chemicals, contaminants, dirt and grim from coming into contact with your precious hardwood. We also tend to be careful about dragging furniture or using abrasive cleaning supplies on our hardwood.

Despite all those efforts, a lot of home owners forget about pre-emptive measure they can take to protect their hardwood, be it oak, chestnut, pine, bamboo or otherwise.

Let’s dig in to a few things you can easily do to both protect and extend the life of your flooring including rug pads for hardwood floors.

1. Protective pads for your furniture

You love your designer chairs, and eloquent end table, but what you don’t love are the scratches they make on your floor during normal use or re-arrangement. This is where a proper “chair glide” or “furniture pad” can make all the difference.

A. Tap On & Nail On Pads

This type of protection is very secure and only needs to be applied once. Essentially, these are fitted pads that are placed on the bottoms of the legs of your chairs or other types of furniture such as a couch, table, or stool. They can be made of plastic, rubber, or even wood. Regardless of material type, the bottom of these pads are always covered with a non-friction, non-scratch padding that slides easily over your hardwood. Because they are installed using a hammer and nail (or a with a srew), the only thing to remember is to ensure the nail or screw head is sunk into the pad and does not stick out so as to prevent scratching.

B. Self-Adhesive Pad

These pads are the same as the aforementioned tap on pads, but instead of using a nail or screw, you simply peel back a paper coating to reveal a glue-like sticky surface that is pressed onto the bottom legs of your furniture to secure them. The adhesive used is made specifically for furniture and will not cause any damage. Whereas materials for the nail on pads can vary, these pads are typically cheaper and made from rubber or felt. While these are the more cost effective option, they typically don’t last nearly as long and will need regular replacement depending on how often you move your furniture.

C. Slip on Pads

These pads, often made from soft plastic or rubber, slid on and off the ends of your desk or chair legs.

2. Know your floor type

Most furniture pads and chair glides are sold for use with all flooring, it is important for you to know what type of flooring you have so you can make the best decision with regards to protecting your home, office, entry way or living room.

Common materials used for padding include: metal, cork, rubber, plastic and bamboo.

  • For Carpet Flooring: hard plastic, steel or other metals work best
  • For Hardwood Floors: rubber and felt are recommended
  • For Ceramic / Tile Floors: felt or soft rubber
  • For Vinyl Flooring: Plastic, rubber, felt
  • For Rubber Floors: rubber, felt

Manufacturers of your flooring may also provide guidance as to the best types of pads so it never hurts to reach out to the manufacturer for their recommendation.

3. What Kind of Traffic?

Just like high “foot traffic” areas, places where you tend to move furniture more often will also cause a lot of wear and tear on your floor, rugs and carpet. Because of this you’ll want to make sure you choose the right rug pad for hardwood floors and the proper furniture pad to protect your floors and carpets.

In general, thicker pads work better for heavy furniture like large tables, couches, appliances, moveable counters, etc. Felt pads can be a good option for kitchens and dining rooms. High use areas and items should be inspected a few times a year for wear and replacement of pads.

4. DIY Options

Rug pads for hardwood floors make a great DIY base for creating your own furniture pads. They are cost effective, strong and sturdy, durable, and are guaranteed to protect.

Simply cut small circles or squares to fit the bottom legs on your chairs, tables, or other items. Use glue or other safe adhesive to attach.
