Laminate floors have really taken off in popularity over the last decade or so, offering a cost effective an visually appealing alternative to traditional hardwood.

Laminate flooring comes in a wide range of materials, with some being just as hard as traditional hardwood like oak or maple, and others being more susceptible to wear like with softer wood such as pine.

Example Materials:

  • Oak
  • Maple
  • Pine
  • Bamboo
  • Cherry
  • Synthetic
  • Pressed board

Because of the material used, laminate floors are particularly prone to damage from normal use and wear, including:

  • Denting
  • Scuffing
  • Scratches
  • Tears / Rips / Cracking
  • Bubbling or loosening up
  • And more

Damage is especially likely to occur in areas of high foot traffic, or where furniture is often moved, dragged, or used, such as in a kitchen or living room. Weather can play a role with humid conditions causing a number of issues, as can pets which tend to scratch up even the most “scratch resistant” flooring.

The good news is that there are some simple steps you can take to limit or prevent damage entirely, extending the life of your floor by years.

We’ll cover the following options to help you keep your floor looking as new as the day it was first installed:

  • Area rugs
  • Rug pads
  • Furniture modifications
  • Slip pads
  • Carpet pieces
  • Felt
  • And more…

1. Cane tips

This is an old but tried and true solution. Tips used for canes (yes, walking canes), are usually rubber. These are available in many sizes and can be readily found at your local hardware or home goods store. Simply place them on the end of your chairs’ legs and push into place. These are a cheap effective way to prevent scratching and dents as people use your chairs.

2. Felt Discs

These can be bought or cut to size. Your choice. If bought as pre-made solutions they will come with a self-adhesive backing which you can use to “stick” them to the tips of your furniture. These work well for “lighter” furniture items but not heavy items like large desks or sofas. Felt pads tend to compress over time and will need to be replaced throughout the year. They provide a moderate amount of protection against sharp corners and scraping/scratching your laminate flooring.

3. Plastic Discs

As the title states, these are simply pre-made plastic discs with padding on the underside (usually felt or rubber). Some come with adhesive for easy application and others have a rim or indented area to simply sit your item on top of. These tend to work well with heavier furniture like couches, pianos, etc.

4. Carpet or Rug Pad Pieces

If you happen to have any leftover pieces of rug padding or carpet, you can cut your own pads to size.

5. Rugs

This one isn’t rocket science, but it is good to remember, especially for high traffic areas like an entry way or living room. Use of a rug pad with your rug can also aid in providing cushioning, support, extra protection, and prevention of slipping.

OTHER TIPS:

1. Lift Don’t Drag!!

This one is easy if you are strong enough (if not get some help). Instead of dragging, pulling or pushing your furniture around, make a point to lift if clear of your laminate floor to reduce the chance of damage.

2. Sliders to the Rescue!

Sliders are plastic discs specifically designed to help your furniture “slide” across hardwood, carpet or laminate. These can reduce damage and make moving or adjusting heavy items a breeze.

3. Humidity Levels

People seem to forget about this one a lot. And even though its most important for those in the south or high humid environments, it can be beneficial to others during the summer or spring months.

For best results, aim to keep your humidity levels between 35-65% at all times. This will prevent warping cause by the expansion and contraction of your laminate floor. A simple humidistat can be used to keep an eye on this, and a normal de-humidifier can aid in keeping things in check.

4. Don’t let Spills Sit

Laminant is especially prone to warping from moisture. So any time a spill occurs, get it cleaned up as soon as possible. We recommend a soft cloth or mop vs anything abrasive that could cause scratches. If you need to use a cleaning product, make sure it is ammonia free. Ammonia can strip away the protective sealant on your floors.

5. Pets

Obviously limiting the traffic of pets on your flooring is optimal, but if that is not feasible, make sure your pet’s nails are trimmed and filed so as to not leave any sharp points that could cause scratches.
