Thick Rug Pad

A cushioned rug pad will add a layer of comfort and floor protection between your rug and floors. Thick rug pads will also provide added insulation, noise reduction and floor protection underneath your area rugs.

With smaller rugs and scatter rugs, a thicker rug pad may cause people to trip if not properly anchored. We recommend a maximum of ¼” thick and under for runner rugs and smaller rugs (4’x6’ and smaller).

Buying a rug is a big decision, and often a pricy one. However, in addition to its utility, the right rug can dramatically contribute to a room’s design and feel.

You’ve likely spent hours on decisions regarding options such as:

  • Style
  • Design
  • Shape
  • Color
  • Size
  • Texture
  • And more...

But despite all that effort, many of us forget about how to protect both our newly purchased rug, and the immaculate floor or carpet that we aim to place it on. Let’s face it, something that took that much consideration to purchase deserves a little protection right?

A rug pad is typically a nice afterthought, and one that comes up all too often after the damage has already been done, be it to your rug or to your floor. Rugs are known to wear thin, provide little padding, and can even scratch and damage hardwood or laminate.

So what kind of rug pad do I need?

Well, rug pads come in all shapes and sizes. But if its comfort and protection you are after, we suggest a thick rug pad.

Thick rug pads come in materials such as:

  • Felt
  • Polyurethane
  • Wool
  • Other natural fibers
  • Felt and rubber combinations
  • Memory foam
  • And more...

Even if comfort is your #1 priority, we always like to make sure consumers know about other potentially important aspects.

1. Safety

Regardless if your rug is an intricate oriental, a handmade gift from your grandmother, or a Target special, they are all prone to slipping, bunching and moving….especially the smaller ones and those placed over tile, laminate or hardwood. If you have elderly individual or children in your household, even more precaution should be taken with regards to establishing a non slip surface. If any of that sounds like it concerns you, we suggest a rubber and felt or rubber and foam combination. This type of thick rug pad will provide the support and cushioning you need, as well as a strong grip to prevent movement under foot.

2. Preventing Rug Damage

A little wear is normal over time, but it would be a shame to see your rug destroyed over a couple years from normal use. A thick rug pad is often a good option to provide cushioning needed to limit impact and friction from below. This can extend the life of your carpet or rug by years.

3. Preventing Floor Damage

Yes, your rug can actually damage your floor. Sometimes via abrasion that results in scratches, or by not providing enough padding to prevent the movement of furniture from denting or scratching the surface. A thick rug pad provides a great protective barrier and is a good option over areas of heavy traffic and heavy furniture or appliances.

Ok, so what you are saying is that I need a thick rug pad right?

Yes and no. Ultimately the decision is yours, but take these features into consideration:

Thin Rug Pad:

  • Not as sturdy and tend to curl at the ends
  • Usually do best with a felt and rubber combo
  • Are better for areas of low clearance like a doorway
  • Provide less cushioning
  • May wear more over time
  • Work well with thinner rugs

Thick Rug Pad

  • Provides more cushioning
  • Provides more insulation
  • Greater sound barrier
  • Higher protection rating (typically)
  • Best for heftier rugs like an Oriental rug

Ok, got it. But what about material?

You’re right. There is a lot to choose from. And there are other consideration as well like synthetic vs natural, American made vs imported, and more. For our money, we always suggest American made, non-toxic and eco-friendly or Green certified options. You can’t put a price on your health and well-being.
